Seattle licenses

Orange, orange-and-white, and orange tabby tags

Each row counts names on this page, not cats of that coat. Seattle did not record color, so this is not a white-spotting rate or a tabby census. Coat, gender, and theme tags are editorial. Seattle recorded the name and how many licenses use that exact spelling. It did not record coat or sex.

Naming an orange cat

Orange cats come with a reputation. Ask any owner and you’ll hear about the friendly, food-motivated, slightly chaotic ginger who greets strangers at the door. That personality plays nicely with food names (Nacho, Waffles, Cheeto), warm nature names (Sunny, Ember, Maple) and big-cat names (Leo, Simba, Tiger).

Here are a few ways to narrow it down.

  • Match the exact shade. Orange covers a lot of ground. Pale cream-orange cats suit Butterscotch, Peaches or Apricot. Deep red-orange cats wear Rusty, Paprika or Copper well.
  • Think about the stripes. Sex-linked orange fur shows tabby markings even when the cat is nonagouti, which is why striped names such as Tiger or Waffles fit a lot of orange cats. That is the genetics cited below, not a headcount from Seattle.
  • Lean into the legend. If your ginger is famously food-obsessed, a name like Garfield or Meatball is a gentle joke the whole family will enjoy.

Why solid orange is tied to the X chromosome

The variant that makes fur orange is on the X chromosome. A male cat has one X, so one copy of the variant makes his coat orange. A female cat has two X chromosomes. She needs the variant on both for a solid orange coat. With one copy, the coat is tortoiseshell or calico. Stanford Medicine summarized that mechanism in May 2025, and Sasaki and colleagues reported the variant in Current Biology the same year. Those papers do not give a percentage of orange cats that are male, so this page does not either.

A sex-linked orange cat shows tabby markings whether or not it carries agouti. The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory says so in its agouti-test note. Schmidt-Küntzel and colleagues, in Genetics (2009), describe orange as epistatic over nonagouti in the pedigree they studied: the tabby pattern stayed visible on orange fur. That is their pedigree, not a count of every orange cat.

Sources: Stanford Medicine, Current Biology, UC Davis VGL, Schmidt-Küntzel et al. 2009.

Tip: Orange kittens often darken or lighten in their first year. Pick a name that works for a range of shades, or one based on personality rather than color.

Have a calico or tortie with orange patches? Many of these names suit her too. Or try the opposite end of the spectrum with black cat names.

Orange cat names: FAQ

What are good names for orange cats?

Food and warmth themes work beautifully. Try Pumpkin, Mango, Clementine, Biscuit, Cheddar or Marmalade. For a bolder cat, try a sun or fire name like Apollo, Ember or Blaze.

Why is an orange coat tied to the cat's sex?

The orange variant sits on the X chromosome. A male cat has one X, so one copy makes his coat orange. A female cat has two X chromosomes and needs the variant on both for a solid orange coat. One copy makes a tortoiseshell or calico pattern. That is the account in Stanford Medicine’s May 2025 explainer and in Sasaki and colleagues, Current Biology (2025). This page does not turn that mechanism into a percentage of all orange cats.

Do orange cats always have stripes?

A sex-linked orange coat shows tabby markings whether or not the cat is agouti. UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory says that about the agouti test, and Schmidt-Küntzel and colleagues (Genetics, 2009) describe orange as epistatic over nonagouti in the pedigree they studied, so the tabby pattern stayed visible on orange fur. That is a genetics result, not a census, and Seattle’s license file does not record coat.

What is a good name for an orange girl cat?

Try Clementine, Poppy, Penny, Ginger, Saffron, Marigold or Yuzu. They're warm and pretty, and still feel special given how rare orange girls are.
