How to choose a name for a girl cat
Girl cat names lean soft and musical. Look at the most popular ones (Luna, Lucy, Lily, Bella) and you’ll notice that most have two syllables and end in a vowel sound. That’s no accident. Names like these are easy to sing out, and many cat owners swear their cats respond better to them.
But “popular” also means common. If you’d rather not share a name with every third cat in the building, here are some angles to explore.
- Borrow from the garden. Flowers, herbs and trees make lovely girl names: Juniper, Hazel, Clover, Wisteria. They’re gentle without being too sugary.
- Go mythic. Goddesses such as Freya, Athena and Artemis suit independent cats. Freya is especially fitting, since Norse stories say her chariot was pulled by cats.
- Pick a grandma name. Mabel, Agnes, Mildred and Edith are wonderfully funny on a tiny kitten and grow into something dignified.
- Match her coat. A calico might be Patches or Calliope. A black girl could be Raven or Noche. Our black cat names and orange cat names pages have more coat-based ideas.
Tip: Sweet names are great, but test them in the voice you’ll actually use. “Princess Sparkle Muffin” is adorable until you need to yell it because she’s on the kitchen counter again.
Popular vs. rare: what the numbers say
Every name on this page shows how many Seattle licenses use that spelling, plus its rank among recorded names. A high count means the spelling is common in this city. A low count means fewer licenses share it. The girl tag is ours, not a field in the city file.

Female cat names: FAQ
What are the most popular female cat names?
The table on this page groups girl-tagged names by how many Seattle licenses use the spelling. Girl is our tag. Seattle did not record the sex of the cat. Luna is the most common spelling in the whole snapshot; the homepage chart shows that count.
What is a cute name for a girl cat?
Doubled and food-inspired names tend to feel the cutest. Try Lulu, Mimi, Kiki, Clementine, Peaches or Honey. For a tiny kitten, Pip, Dot or Thimble are hard to beat.
What is a female cat called?
An unspayed female cat is traditionally called a queen, and a mother cat with kittens is often called a dam. A young female is simply a kitten until she grows up, usually around her first birthday.
Can I give my girl cat a boy's name?
Absolutely. Your cat won't mind, and gender-swapped names can be charming. Many popular cat names, such as Charlie, Pepper and Scout, already work for any cat.
